Mosque raises more than £1 million in television fundraiser

Monday 14th September 2009

London's oldest mosque, the East London Mosque broke all ethnic television fundraising records on satellite television channel, Channel S on Friday night.

The mosque were raising for their proposed expansion project - an eight storey building with increased prayer space,  a visitor centre for non-Muslims, and five floors of facilities and services for women.

Viewers flooded the station with calls to pledge their donations to the mosque, raising over £1 million.

The mosque launched its brand new fundraising initiative on the night - the Alhambra Donors Wall - where donations of over £1500 or more will be commemorated by an inscribed tile on the wall which will be displayed in the new building.

Secretary of the mosque Ayub Khan, delighted at the total, commented, "We are amazed at the generosity and support of the viewers of Channel S. The Alhambra Donors Wall is a way to recognise those contributions that have been made and to give something back to the community that has given us so much support over the years."

Building works on the expansion project began in June and will hopefully be completed in time for the mosque's centenary celebration next year.
