Alhamdulillah, the prayer carpets in the East London Mosque have been replaced with custom-made new carpets. Most of the existing carpets were those originally fitted when the mosque opened in 1985, though the carpet in the main prayer hall was changed once in 1996.

The congregation donated for this replacement work last Ramadan and in the months since. Their generosity meant that the best quality carpets could be purchased; the total cost was over £70,000. Supplied by Ozkul, Turkey’s leading manufacturer of mosque carpets, it is their highest quality ‘platinum’ weave, using pure new wool from New Zealand (4500 g/m2). Insha’Allah, these carpets should see years of service.

Most of the original carpet has been donated to other mosques and Islamic societies.

A team of four fitters worked around the clock for over a week to complete this huge task, one floor at a time so that prayers could continue in the mosque, using the LMC halls for extra capacity, and ensuring all areas were available for Jumuah prayer on Friday.
