26 September 2020 – 46 enthusiastic cyclists completed the 60-mile ride from Cambridge to the East London Mosque, raising money for the East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre, and promoting good health through cycling.

Cyclists were put into eight teams in order to comply with Government rules. Despite cloudy and wet weather conditions, the participants – the youngest of which was 18 and the oldest 53 – rose to the challenge! Amidst the rain, Mosque staff and volunteers brought smiles to the faces of the hardworking riders by providing refreshments and lunch breaks along the route.

Some riders faced punctures, but nothing the on-hand support vehicles couldn’t resolve! The fastest group completed the route in four and a half hours – well done!

The cyclists were awarded with personalised certificates and custom-made medals, specially made for this event, presented at the East London Mosque by its Chairman, Muhammad Habibur Rahman, and the Vice Chairman, Ayub Khan.

The ‘Ride 4 Your Mosque’ event aimed to bring people together for a fun, healthy challenge to raise money to keep the vital services of the East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre running. The Mosque’s income drastically reduced due to COVID-19. The event not only helped the Mosque, but brought together people from across the community and built lasting friendships. The overall total amount raised is £26,146 with Md Abul Kalam declared as the top fundraiser, raised over £2k, Masha'Allah.

Senior Fundraising Officer for the Mosque, Tozommul Ali, said, “This event was something different, and definitely promoted a healthier lifestyle. We were delighted with the support shown by all the participants, they were full of enthusiasm. We are grateful for the time and energy that they have put into training. I would like to thank everyone for sponsoring the cyclists. This also would not have been possible without the hard work and the sacrifice of our volunteers and staff.”

The East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre would like to extend a special ‘thank you’ to Horizon Cycling Club and their volunteers who supported route logistics and team management, to Islamic Help and Clifford Bikes for sponsoring the event, and to all the dedicated staff and volunteers who made this wonderful event possible.
