Established in 2015, the East London Mosque Archives has a unique and growing archive, which is housed in a purpose built strong room with mobile shelving and climate controls. It is the only mosque in Britain with such facility. The Archives serves as a repository for the institutional records of the Mosque, dating from 1910 onwards. It also holds the records of organisations affiliated with the Mosque as well as personal papers of individuals and records of different Muslim-related institutions documenting various aspects of British Muslim presence and history.

Purpose of the role

We are looking for volunteers that can help us to make our archives more accessible to the public, care for the different collections and assist with engagement activities. This role would ideally suit candidates wanting to pursue a career in the archives/heritage sectors. There will be opportunity to get involved with a range of activities depending on your area of interest. You will also receive regular one-to-one support and full training relevant to your work activity.

Volunteers will be:

  • Listing new archive donations.
  • Adding description and subject terms to existing catalogue entries.
  • Labelling and boxing folders.
  • Researching content for the Archives’ social media platforms.
  • Assisting with exhibitions and other archive-related events.

Commitment

Volunteers should be willing to commit themselves to 1 day per week for a period of minimum 3 consecutive months. Hours of volunteering will be from 10:00am-4:00pm. This role is based at the Mosque’s complex, Maryam Centre, 45 Fieldgate Street, London, E1 1DU. We will reimburse volunteer travel expenses where possible.
