Sunday 14^th June 2020 – We at the East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre stand in solidarity with the African-American community and the people around the world protesting against institutionalised racism within our societies, following the brutal murder of George Floyd in the USA.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed high regard of humanity irrespective of colour or race, as he ﷺ said in his final sermon: “All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white person has no superiority over a black person nor does a black person have any superiority over a white person except by piety and good action.”

We support the calls for justice in the UK, USA and elsewhere globally against systemic racism. While not as apparent in its form as in the USA, we know it exists here in the UK, from the Windrush scandal to the Grenfell disaster, together we must work together to stamp it out.

Muhammad Habibur Rahman, Chairman of the East London Mosque, said “Our religion teaches us about the equality of humanity and the importance of justice for all. It is disheartening and unacceptable that discrimination is still embedded in the very institutions whose purpose is to serve and protect all. We need to stand together to challenge racism, prejudice and injustice in our societies.”

Our thoughts and condolences go out to George’s family and friends and all those who have suffered, big or small, due to racism globally.
