Support us How we use your donations Your donations allow the East London Mosque to deliver vital services and help those in need. As our institution has grown over the years, it has been able to diversify its income, such as our Waqf initiative, and the hiring of our facilities. These other sources provide more than half of the Mosque’s income, and pay for our administrative costs. This means the whole amount of every donation is used for charitable purposes. Here we give a bit more detail about the different types of donations. Zakah & Zakat al-Fitr The amount of Zakah we receive continues to increase. We pass on the whole amount of Zakah, without any deduction. In recent times, we have distributed most of the Zakah directly to eligible local recipients, such as refugees. We also send some Zakah through our charity partners, who are able to help the needy overseas. All the Zakat al-Fitr we collect in Ramadan is sent to the poor and needy in a number of countries, passed through our charity partners. We have been advised that Gift Aid is not considered part of Zakah or Zakat al-Fitr, so Gift Aid from Zakah and Zakat al-Fitr is used as general Sadaqah (charity). Any surplus is used as general Sadaqah, along with any Gift Aid. Emergency appeals We may launch a special appeal when there is a natural disaster, such as the floods in Bangladesh and Pakistan, and the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. All the donations, without any deduction, are passed to our charity partners who are able to provide the aid, along with all the Gift Aid from those donations. General donations All the general donations, along with any Gift Aid, are used to support our charitable activities.
