The East London Mosque (ELM) welcomes the increased turnout in both the general and local elections in east London.

Despite intimidation from certain quarters, the local population – both Muslim and non-Muslim – turned out in unprecedented numbers to exercise their democratic choice.

The trustees of ELM congratulate all those who took part.

“We are proud of the work of our imams and staff in encouraging participation, and countering false claims that voting is forbidden,” commented Ayub Khan, Secretary of the East London Mosque.

“The community successfully saw off threats from extremists of the far right, who have no place or home in east London.”

“As a mosque representing a wide cross-section of this community, with a long tradition of community services, interfaith engagement and standing against extremism, we look forward to working with the newly elected local councillors and MPs.”
