The East London Mosque (ELM) welcomes a new initiative to provide aid and assistance to refugees and applauds the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) for its successful launch of the campaign “Celebrate Eid with Refugees”.

Having delivered several successful projects in aid of refugees over the years, the ELM recognises the scale of the challenge. Refugees are among the most vulnerable people in our society and require all the support we can give.

We are delighted that the new MCB initiative will raise awareness of the plight of refugees and develop aid programmes with mosques, Muslim charities, and grass-roots organisations.

The ELM also commends the launch of the “Refugees Charter 2023”. Drawing inspiration from the tradition of the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ and Islamic sources, the charter sets out the best practice in addressing the plight of refugees.

The ELM welcomes the recent judgment by British courts that the government’s controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful. We oppose the weaponization of the plight of refugees for political purposes.

Refugees require support and assistance from the third sector, voluntary organisations and the local community. Therefore, we urge mosques and Islamic centres, often ideally placed to offer basic support at a local level, to open their doors to refugees.
