You can help:

• if you have an old smartphone, the refugees need these to complete all the online forms and to keep in touch – if you’re in the area, you can drop them off at our Reception
• you can also make an online donation, just put in the note it’s for the refugees, this will help provide clothes, food and other essentials

The East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre has recently helped over 200 refugees and asylum seekers who are temporarily accommodated in the borough.

Those helped include women and children who were in desperate need of essential items such as clothing, toiletries and other basic provisions.

Sufia Alam, Head of Programmes & Maryam Centre (part of the Mosque), who has been leading on coordination efforts, said: “These families and individuals have arrived on our doorstep from war-torn regions of the world, seeking safety and security. They are in desperate need of our compassion and support. They faced a perilous journey, arriving in the UK with nothing, and we must support them as best as we can.”

Dilowar Khan, Director of the East London Mosque, said: “We will continue to work closely with our partner organisations to help meet the needs of these refugee families. We have asked our community to assist where possible, and we thank them for their ongoing support.”

Last week, the Mosque encouraged our community to donate unused mobile phones, so they can be given to the refugees to contact their loved ones and their families.

The Mosque is working with Tower Hamlets Council and charity relief organisation, Islamic Relief, to ensure the continued needs of the refugees are met and to support their physical and mental wellbeing.
