As we enter the month of Rajab, I want to share what makes this time so special in our Islamic calendar. Allah tells us in the Qur’an that there are twelve months, and amongst these, four are sacred. This isn’t just any ordinary marking of time – it’s a system that’s been in place since, as Allah The Most High says:

Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar, holds a unique position as one of these sacred months. It also marks the beginning of a blessed progression of three consecutive months – Rajab, followed by Sha‘ban, then culminating in Ramadan. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasised the special nature of these months, teaching us to be mindful of their significance.

Understanding the significance of these sacred months, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ further explained their cycle, saying “Time has completed its cycle and has come to the state of the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year consists of twelve months, of which four are inviolable.” Among these special months, three come one after another, while Rajab stands on its own as the fourth sacred month.

Think of it this way: just as certain places are special to Allah, like the Masjid Al-Haram where one sin is worse than seventy outside it, certain times carry extra weight too. Our actions – both good and bad – have a stronger impact during Rajab. As Allah reminds us in the Qur’an:

I love how the early scholars explained the natural progression through these three blessed months. Abu Bakr al-Balkhi compared it to farming: Rajab is when we plant our seeds, Sha‘ban is when we water them, and Ramadan is harvesting time.

Another scholar used the example of rainfall: Rajab is like the winds that come first, Sha‘ban is like the gathering clouds, and Ramadan is the blessed rain itself.

My favourite comparison is the one that likens these months to a tree: Rajab is when the leaves sprout, Sha‘ban is when the branches grow, and Ramadan is when we gather the fruits. These simple examples show us how each month builds upon the last.

Allah warns us to be extra careful during these sacred months:

This includes both harming ourselves through sin and wronging others through unfair actions. Both carry extra weight during this special time.

Our pious predecessors knew something we often forget – don’t wait until Ramadan to start getting ready! They understood that preparing well in Rajab and Sha‘ban leads to a better Ramadan. It’s like training for a marathon – you can’t just show up on race day without preparation.

This month allows us to show this piety in action by respecting its special nature and using it to prepare for what's ahead.

Let’s use this blessed month of Rajab to begin our spiritual preparation. As I mentioned above, our scholars beautifully explained, “The year is like a tree – Rajab is when it spreads its leaves, Sha‘ban is when its branches grow, and Ramadan is the time of harvesting its fruits.”

When we think of it this way, we can see why starting our spiritual journey in Rajab makes perfect sense. As a farmer knows, you can’t expect fruits without first nurturing the tree through its stages of growth, but we, too, must nurture our souls through these blessed months. The time to start isn’t when Ramadan arrives – it’s now, in Rajab, when the first spiritual leaves begin to sprout.

May Allah grant us the ability to honour this sacred month, to increase our worship, and to stay away from sins. May He accept our preparations and allow us to reach Ramadan in the best state of faith and devotion.

Ameen ya Rabbil Alameen.
