Guidelines for Itikaf 2022

Itikaf is in the last 10 days of Ramadan (9 days if Ramadan is only 29 days long). The exact dates depend on when Ramadan starts, which we will not find out until the evening of Friday 1 April 2022.

Application

  • Applications will be open from Monday 21 March 2022.
  • Completed applications must be sent by Monday 4 April 2022. No fee is payable at this stage.
  • Applicants wishing to perform Nawafil Itikaf (optional Itikaf on odd nights) must also use this application process.
  • You may only apply for yourself; applications will not be considered for third parties.
  • Applicants must be 18 or over on the date of application.

Selection

  • The draw will be held in public after Tarawih in the main prayer hall on Friday 8 April 2022, insha’Allah.
  • All valid applications will be put into a draw, then the allocated number of places will be picked.
  • Successful applicants must make full payment to confirm their place. They will be given a log number and a receipt for the payment.

Costs

  • The contribution to cover the costs of staying in the Mosque is £120 for those requiring meals, and £60 for those not requiring meals.
  • The cost of Nawafil Itikaf will be proportional: £60 with meals and £30 without.

Sleeping Arrangements

  • For those doing the full Itikaf, individual cubicles will be allocated in the ELM Basement Hall or Old Main Prayer Hall.
  • There are no cubicles for those doing Nawafil Itikaf, who must use designated open areas.
  • You need to bring your own sleeping bags, pillows and blankets.

Eating Arrangements

  • The food served will be Asian cuisine; we are not able to offer a wide variety of food.
  • You need to bring your own cutlery (cup, plate, and spoon).
  • Iftar and Suhur will be provided at the set times.

Valuables

  • The East London Mosque will NOT provide any additional security and so you are requested NOT to bring any valuables. Particular items discouraged are: laptops, mobile phones, credit cards and large sums of money.
  • You are responsible for your belongings at all times and the Mosque does not take any responsibility for items that are lost or stolen.

Other

  • No parking is available.
  • Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited.
  • The East London Mosque reserves the right to amend Itikaf arrangements or withdraw the allocation of places, for example if the pandemic worsens again requiring further restrictions.
