UK Imams Unite for Palestine Through Football

The 2nd annual Minaret Cup 2025 – Imams’ Charity Football Match took place on Saturday 19th July 2025. Organised by the East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre and proudly supported by Muslim Aid, it brought together Imams from across the UK for an inspiring 11-a-side football match in solidarity with Palestine.

This year’s event successfully raised over £16,000 for our brothers and sisters in Gaza, funding a vital Mobile Medical Unit. The initiative exemplifies how community leadership and faith-based unity can deliver tangible humanitarian aid. Although the event has concluded, fundraising efforts are still ongoing to continue supporting this vital cause.

The highlight of the day was the spirited clash between Gaza United and Olive Branch FC, where Gaza United triumphed with a resounding 5–2 victory. But beyond the scoreline, the Minaret Cup was about more than football, it was about brotherhood, wellness, and purposeful engagement.

Reflecting on the event, Shaykh Syed Anis Haque, Imam of the East London Mosque, said:

“It shows that Imams are human beings, that they can also have fun and this match also showed that Imams are footballers too!”

The match was also live streamed on ELM Facebook and YouTube channels with professional commentary, allowing supporters from across the country to watch the game.

Junaid Ahmed, CEO of the East London Mosque, commented:

“Alhamdulillah, this is a truly unique and inspiring event that brings together several important elements: it fosters unity among Imams, sets a powerful example for our youth, promotes healthy living, and most importantly, it’s a charity match raising much-needed funds for our brothers and sisters in Gaza.”

Farhal Ahmad, from Muslim Aid, the event’s sponsor, added:

“The Minaret Cup perfectly embodies the spirit of unity and generosity. At Muslim Aid, we’re honoured to support this initiative, helping to bring vital medical support to the people of Gaza. We thank all the Imams and their mosques, organisers and donors for turning their love for the beautiful game into a beautiful cause.”

The success of the Minaret Cup would not have been possible without the efforts of our dedicated staff and volunteers. A special Jazakamullahu Khairan to Ihsan Ahmed, one of the lead volunteer organisers of this event. Their commitment and teamwork were instrumental in delivering a day filled with joy, purpose, and impactful giving. We extend our deepest thanks and duas for their ongoing service.

Together, we showed that when our community comes together with heart, humour, and a football it can achieve something truly beautiful for a noble cause. May Allah accept from us all, Ameen.
