News & Islam From the Imam’s desk... Reviving Our Hearts with the Dhikr of Allah By Shaykh Abdul Qayum25 April 2025 ﷽ In this week’s khutbah, I wanted to share some valuable reflections that touch the very essence of our faith and existence: the remembrance of Allah. It is a subject that is as light on the tongue as it is heavy in the scales of our deeds. One day, a companion came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, there are many injunctions of Islam for me, many acts of worship, and I cannot perform them all. Could you tell me something easy to which I may hold fast?” The Prophet ﷺ responded, Make sure your tongue remains moist with the remembrance of Allah. SubhanAllah! This is such a simple and beautiful advice that anyone can hold onto and make part of their daily life. Allah says in the Qur'an: And He also says: Remembrance of Allah is not confined to the times of prayer alone. Whether you are walking, driving, sitting, or lying down, your heart and tongue can be alive with the remembrance of Allah. Unlike other acts of worship that require ritual purity, remembrance of Allah requires no wudhu. It is always open to us. What then stops us? Sadly, it is often our own distractions. How easy it is today to lose precious moments to mobile phones, social media, and endless scrolling! Allah has given us this limited life as an opportunity to fill our books of deeds. Continued remembrance of Allah will guarantee that when it’s presented to us on the Day of Reckoning, deeds we considered small will be heavier on the scale than anything we can imagine. Yet many are heedless, distracted by the fleeting and forgetful of the Eternal life in the Hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ once said during an expedition with his companions: “The Mufarridun have gone ahead.” When asked who the Mufarridun were, he ﷺ replied, “Those men and women who frequently remember Allah.” The likeness of the one who remembers Allah and the one who does not, is like that of the living and the dead. Our homes too, they can either be alive with life or become haunted and dead, based on whether they are filled with the remembrance of Allah. Allah says: How many of us are burdened with anxieties, financial worries, and family problems? Yet Allah tells us that the path to tranquillity is not in wealth, or distraction, or worldly achievements, it is in His remembrance. Another verse warns us: And He warns: Dear brothers and sisters, when we forsake remembrance, Shaytan becomes our companion. And if we make our hearts alive with dhikr, it is as if we are grazing in the gardens of Jannah even in this world. The Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever wants to graze in the gardens of Paradise, let him remember Allah often. Reflect on the beauty of those who remember Allah: Without remembrance, our hearts become barren, our days empty, and our deeds without blessing. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that our world will not be good without the remembrance of Allah, and even Jannah would not be complete without seeing Allah with our own eyes. Let us, then, be conscious of our time, of our breath, of the immense value of each moment. Let us not allow the devices and distractions to rob us of what truly matters. Let our tongues be moist with dhikr every morning, every evening, after every prayer, before sleeping, before and after every action. May Allah make us among those whose hearts are alive with His remembrance, whose homes are filled with light, and whose final meeting with Him is with joy and acceptance. Ameen.
